Charging Piles Go Global: Beat Acclimatization

Oct 24, 2025 Leave a message

In the wave of globalization of new energy vehicles, charging pile enterprises have also set foot on the journey of going global. However, this journey is not a smooth one. "Acclimatization" has become a more troublesome problem than price competition. It is a systematic challenge in policies, technologies, operations, culture and other aspects. Only by solving these problems one by one can enterprises gain a firm foothold in overseas markets.

Infrastructure and Policy Environment: The First Hurdle in Going Global

The domestic charging pile industry has benefited from many "policy dividends", but these dividends disappear when going overseas. When building charging stations in China, the power supply bureau often helps to pull through the external lines, and some areas also reduce or exempt basic electricity fees, which greatly reduces the investment cost of operators. But overseas, not only is there no such support, but applying for electricity also has to face the dilemma of "high cost and long cycle", which directly leads to the lengthening of the customer's delivery, installation and commissioning cycle, and the rhythm of enterprise capital return is also disrupted.

European and American countries have set up localized production thresholds through legislation. For example, the United States requires that charging piles receiving subsidies under the "Infrastructure Act" must be built in the United States, and since July 2024, 55% of the components are required to be produced in the United States. These trade barriers have significantly increased the compliance costs for Chinese charging pile enterprises to go global.

Different certification standards in overseas countries also constitute a threshold. According to China Energy News, charging pile products exported to the European Union need CE certification, with a cycle of 3-5 months and a cost of about 500,000 yuan; exported to the United States need UL certification, with a cycle of 9-10 months and a cost of about 1,000,000 yuan. Other countries and regions also have their own certification requirements. This phenomenon of standard fragmentation makes the era when one certification can be used in multiple countries a thing of the past.

Technical Solutions and Operations: Localization is the Hard Truth

Mature domestic charging pile system solutions are difficult to directly apply overseas. Overseas customers need an energy management system compatible with photovoltaics and energy storage, as well as a flexible modular expansion scheme in stages, so as to adapt to the promotion rhythm of different projects.

The adaptation problems at the operation level are more fragmented but critical. The difference in payment habits requires the charging pile system to be compatible with various local payment methods. For example, credit card payment is relied on in Europe, and e-wallets are popular in Southeast Asia. Data security barriers are also tricky. European and American customers rarely use domestic charging operation platforms, and "OCPP interoperability" has become a prerequisite for cooperation. Once the interoperability fails, the cooperation basically falls through.

Charging piles are not equipment that "can be left alone after installation". They need to continuously interact with platforms, vehicles and users, and abnormal situations occur frequently. Statistics show that about 2/3 of abnormalities are caused by objective factors, and only less than 1/3 are caused by equipment quality. This makes the importance of localized services far exceed that of the products themselves. How to respond quickly and solve problems efficiently has become one of the core competitiveness of enterprises.

Cultural Cognition and Team Management: Invisible Barriers

Cultural and cognitive differences are easily overlooked "invisible barriers". At the communication level, Chinese and foreign people have different logical understandings and ways of doing things, which often leads to repeated adjustments in demand docking and increases internal communication costs.

At the cognitive level, it is impossible to directly apply domestic standards for quality and service to developed countries. Overseas customers have more stringent requirements for product reliability and after-sales service. For example, the European market not only pays attention to the function of charging piles, but also attaches great importance to appearance design, regarding it as a kind of industrial art. This forces enterprises to jump out of the inertia of "customer relationship maintenance" and turn to deepening product quality improvement and technological research and development.

The establishment and management of localized teams are crucial. The logical thinking and working modes of overseas teams are different from those in China. Successful enterprises often establish independent teams overseas, covering the entire chain of sales, technical support, training and customer service, and even set up local warehouses and training centers to achieve true cultural integration.

Solutions: From Product Export to Ecological Empowerment

Facing these challenges, enterprises need to shift from "product export" to "system adaptation + localized deep cultivation". Technically, we should create flexible, scalable and multi-scenario compatible solutions, such as designing integrated PV-storage-charging solutions for the needs of different regions.

Operationally, establish an efficient localized service network to adapt to local payment and data security requirements. Some enterprises solve the complexity of overseas payment through "aggregated collection + cross-border fund management", allowing enterprises to focus on their main business.

In terms of business model, it should be upgraded from "single-point sales" to "ecological empowerment", integrating China's mature "source-grid-load-storage" ecology with the green transformation needs of overseas parks to create "equipment + park charging and swapping" solutions, and realize the expansion from one-time sales revenue to energy sharing and carbon asset revenue.

To solve the multi-dimensional challenges of charging piles going global, enterprises need to accurately grasp the characteristics of each regional market and achieve comprehensive localized deep cultivation in technology, operation, culture and management. Only in this way can they truly cross the gap of "acclimatization" and take a leading position in the global new energy wave.
